Nutritional evaluation is helpful for many people, including those wishing to lose weight. Obesity is associated with low back pain and arthritis of the hips and knees. Diabetics also benefit from a review of their dietary habits, so as to better control their disease.

About our dietitian: Wendy Holtzman, MS, RD, CDE

The Benefits of Dietary Consult

The most widely accepted use of a dietitian is in managing diabetes, which includes educating patients on diet, blood glucose monitoring, insulin therapy, and management of gestational (pregnancy) diabetes. Dietitians are also useful in other conditions such as heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and disorders of the gastrointestinal system. Weight loss relies strongly on a proper diet, and in turn, the loss of weight can alleviate many musculoskeletal issues including back pain and arthritis in the knees and hips.

Is it Covered by Insurance?

Once a patient receives a physician's prescription for a dietary consult, the staff of The Marlowe Institute may contact the patient's insurance to determine coverage. If not covered, Wendy may work at a negotiated lower rate for cash-paying patients. Insurance covers blocks of time spent with the dietitian; the typical initial consult may range from one to one-and-a-half hours, and follow-up appointments generally take less time. Many insurances set a limit on the number of hours or visits with the dietitian per year.
